The Peacock Roams the House

Have you ever visited a tropical resort that boasts “wild” peacocks roaming the grounds? Even Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle has been known to let them wander on occasion. There really is something memorable about walking around a corner and finding yourself face-to-face with a fantastically adorned marvel of nature.

We like to think that this chair achieves the same effect in the Issaquah home we designed it for.

The wood and wicker is quickly updated with a shiny purple lacquer that we slathered on generously. And the vibrant peacock-patterned fabric is positioned perfectly around the seat cushion and finished off with a matching braided welt. It really is the perfect perch.

For the Love of Fish

There is a place for a heavily textured fish fabric. But we’d venture to say that place probably isn’t in an otherwise well-appointed Newcastle den. Yes, the Mister of the house loves his largemouth bass. But yes, you can also find a place to celebrate your hobbies with smaller household items that are more interchangeable than large sitting chairs. See below:

In a nod to his preference, we kept the fish print–we just covered it up with a touch-me taffeta in a rich golden stripe. You really need to see this piece in their home! The gold positively shimmers in the low, direct lighting of the den. With the addition of a rich red throw blanket and a mahogany side table tinged with bronze metalwork, this drab, stained sitting chair became an inviting, luxurious addition to an otherwise desirable Bellevue home.

Sold: Extra Long “Mohair” Sofa

8.5' wool velvet sofa

When you’ve been around as long as we have, you get a feel for what’s needed inside Bellevue living rooms. Are you looking for a piece of furniture to fill out that one long wall that dwarfs every peice of art you buy? How about that open space that needs a cozy, unassuming line–one that separates living areas while inviting conversation?

Look no further.

8.5' wool velvet sofa

This luxurious custom-made elongated sofa boasts an impressive eight and a half feet of length! With typical depth and height (34″ x 27.5″), it isn’t oversized or overstuffed. We like to call it “just about right!”

We took the sturdy frame, added all new supports and springs, and crafted the piece from the inside out. We chose a decadent Robert Allen wool velvet upholstery fabric in color “Cocoa” with 100,000 double rubs (in English – it’ll withstand a lot of wear). The look and feel are reminiscent of mohair, without the designer price. At $1,900, you can probably afford that big, gorgeous painting you’ve been eyeing as well.

A Crash Course in Coordination (No More Matchy-Matchies)

First of all: We fell in LOVE with this upholstery fabric! We’d upholster it onto just about anything. So when a new client came in and picked this-very-fabric, we knew it was a match made in heaven. Okay, to be specific, it wasn’t a match exactly. It was a coordination. Our client had a couple of un-matched dining chairs that she wanted to bring into parity in the same way many Eastsiders (and national magazines) are setting their tables with mismatched china and tableware. We love the look. It shows a talent for coordinating colors, textures and items that goes way beyond purchasing an entire matched set at Thomasville (although there are times for that).

As always, It’s Bout Time Upholstery went over and above: we added a beautiful double welt velour trim on the armchair and centered the textile pattern perfectly, even with differing seat dimensions. See you later matchy-matchies; we’ve got some coordinating to do!

The Art of Whimsy

When we talk about the Art of Upholstery, we typically refer to the fine artistic elements of layout, texture and color. Upholstery is an art of detail. Each line, flourish, dot and flower must lay out straight; every ounce of batting must align as well as provide comfort…. What we don’t usually think of when we speak of the Art of Upholstery is the ability to use our wildest creative genius to concoct creative, whimsical works of art.

We think this is the case because, well, many people wouldn’t necessarily pair the four fabrics below and place them on a single overstuffed chair. But boy, it was fun to do! We loved the opportunity to challenge our day-to-day norms and come up with a true piece of furniture art that pleased our customer to no end.

And that’s the thing. When you choose to have your furniture professionally reupholstered, the sky is your limit. Whether you want classic or cooky, It’s Bout Time can upholster your furniture exactly the way you choose. And no matter how much whimsy you want, you can rest assured that all of the details will align for a superior quality product every time.

Leave the Perfection to Us

Dining chairs are a common DIY project these days. And if the creativity strikes you, you should do it. We applaud your gumption! But if you or your spouse are looking for perfection, you may want to leave it to the professionals.

Look at the workmanship in these straight-backed dining chairs. See how the starbursts are exquisitely matched to the walnut wood detailing? See how each piece of fabric is perfectly centered, and the curve of the cushion is aligned and inviting? Now look closer. Your It’s Bout Time upholsterers double piped the chair backs and cushions, creating more interest and adding additional value to the pieces.

When you want your upholstery job done with intricate precision and care, call It’s Bout Time Upholstery. We’ll make sure your custom furniture or upholstery projects are absolutely perfect. We’ve been upholstering chairs for over three decades and, while we have no formal psychology training, we’re pretty sure that a trip to our store could save you (and your perfectionist spouse) a few trips to the marriage counselor!

The Upholsterer Opens Her Doors

Large floral print upholstered chair

Ever wonder what Guy Fieri or Rachael Ray cook for their loved ones on a Tuesday night? Curious to know what Mario Andretti drives around town, or even which operating system Bill Gates runs on his laptop? We can’t answer those questions for you, but in the spirit of brotherhood, we can give you a brief glimpse into the living room of our very own upholsterer, It’s Bout Time’s owner, Judee Burklund.

Judee’s living room maintains a warm feel while boasting bold patterns atop sleek, modern lines. How does she do it? By combining traditional upholstery elements (like the scalloped back and nailhead trim of this custom made sitting chair) with whimsical fabrics, “colder” colors, and straight lines (like this chair’s thin, gray legs).

For over 30 years, the Burklund family has been creating custom furniture for eastside and Seattle clients. You’ll find Judee in our showroom throughout the week. Stop by to meet her and you’ll be sure to learn something you can take home with you. Literally.

The Wing Chair Goes Organic

When it comes to updating your home decor, no task is as eco-friendly as reupholstering a well-loved piece of furniture. Except, perhaps, reupholstering it with 100% organic, sustainable fabrics! Here at It’s Bout Time Upholstery, we are proud to offer green, eco-friendly fabric lines from the world-renowned brands you trust. Kravet Green, Duralee Eco-Friendly, Pindler Green, and Robert Allen Naturals are only some of the environmentally aware  fabric lines we utilize.

This classic wing chair with its shiny wood legs came to us for an organic update. It’s headed to a cozy room with a nautical motif, so we tied in the theme with subdued red piping. Toss on a fabulous throw pillow, and relax knowing you’ve done your part to both create a beautiful living environment and sustain a healthier world.

Four “Chairs” for Spring Time!

Spring time sunlight brings with it a new awareness of dust, clutter and… faded upholstery. On the next sunny day, draw up your blinds and take a good look around your living room, entryway and dining room. Upholstered chairs and sofas in these highly visible entertaining areas are often victims of sun exposure that leaves their colors muted and uneven. If your furniture could use a little spring cleaning, take a hint from the upcoming season and visit us to browse through our cheery collection of fabrics in springtime hues.

This season, all colors bright, airy and bold are in! And at It’s Bout Time Upholstery, we’re finishing up the first of our spring redecorating projects. Here are a few examples of what spring can mean in your home. Whether its bold and modern (like the snake-patterned armless chair in teal), a delicate classic (like the breezy white floral below), a study in contrasts (like the ultra-modern zebra print on a traditional armchair body), or a flouncy, fun floral (like the blue lacquered poppy armchair), let It’s Bout Time take your home spaces from drab to dynamite this spring!

… And if your chairs are weathering too quickly, may we suggest some new custom-made window treatments!?

Not Your Everyday Nailhead Headboard

Custom made headboard and bench

It’s okay. We know that not every brown headboard will match your bedding, your armoire, your curtains and your foot bench. It’s yet another reason to skip premade bed accoutrements and let us help you select that perfect shade that will tie the room together.

This fabulous king-sized bed sat alone in the middle of a large, white-washed master suite. Our client needed a brown headboard that contrasted the luster of her side tables in a shape that brought out the square pattern in her bedding. But we did her one better. We added an additional custom-built bench to add yet another layer of texture, shape and color. Do you think we nailed it? We do.
